Summary: (Summarize primary purpose of job function)
Provides General Surgery care to his/her patients including but not limited to performing diagnostic evaluations, surgery to correct deformities, repair injuries, prevent diseases, and improve function in patients. Examines patients to verify necessity of surgical interventions, estimate possible risk to patient, and determine best operational procedure. Reviews reports of patient's general physical condition, reactions to medications, and medical history. Performs history and physical examination, writes treatment plans, and keeps progress notes covering diagnostic evaluation, progress, and discharge. Completes narrative summaries and other documents required for adequate follow-up. Responsible for providing supervision and guidance to the physician assistants. Checks their treatment plans, assists and guides them in their performance of necessary surgery, assigns patients and either schedules or designates the authority to schedule "on-call" activities. Provides consultation services to other departments of the hospital and to other hospitals and healthcare providers as contracted. The General surgeon is expected to function independently in his/her specialty, but is encouraged to seek the assistance of other members of the surgical staff whenever appropriate. If appropriate, will refer patients to appropriate subspecialists. This includes extensive telephone support of primary care physicians as well as mid-level practitioners aides in the area. All team members of Southeast Georgia Health System will promote a culture of safety, follow established policies, and adhere to all state and federal regulatory requirements, Joint Commission requirements, and national patient safety standards.
Service Excellence: All team members of Southeast Georgia Health System will promote service excellence by developing and maintaining positive relationships with customers, other team members, and the medical staff and will ensure the highest quality of care by performing their responsibilities according to the highest professional standards.

RN's, First Assist, PA and Surgical Scrub techs
Essential Responsibilities:
1.
Provides care to patients presenting for treatment.
2.
Performs focused and complete physicals as health needs and patient/employer request indicate.
3.
Directs patient care by performing a patient assessment, review of systems and physical examination. Utilizes the data obtained to develop a plan of care to include patient and family education, proper referrals, discharge planning and evaluating the effectiveness of care. This is accomplished in conjunction with the health care team and is supported by the appropriate documentation for compliance with regulatory standards.
4.
Prescribes appropriate pharmacological agents and treatments; Orders appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests. Signs off on all final x-ray interpretations and laboratory results.
5.
Collaborates with other health care providers as the patient health needs dictate, consults and reviews cases with physicians and other health care providers; Refers patients to other physicians/specialist for continued care as the patients needs indicate.
6.
Reviews patient records and completes peer review and other chart reviews as requested.
7.
Utilizes appropriate E and M coding guidelines for billing. Participates in the SGHS compliance program. Collaborates with the billers to follow up on denials in an effort to achieve appropriate reimbursement for services provided.
Minimum Qualifications:
Board Certified or Board Eligible
Education
Graduate of an accredited Medical College or College of Osteopathic Medicine and completion of an accredited residency training program and approved year of post-graduate training in general surgery.
Experience
Minimum of two (2) years experience in Inpatient & Outpatient setting. The duties of a general surgeon are both mentally and physical demanding. This includes long periods in the operating room and office. In order to provide general surgery care at all hours of the day; periods without rest or sleep are sometimes required. In order to adequately perform the duties of this position, excellent physical and mental health is required. Completion of an accredited residency training program with one year of post-graduate training in general surgery.
